At train stations, airports and bus terminals, arrival and departure information is transmitted via networks of screens. The antiquated aesthetic of these displays is largely ignored as commuters pass through the non-spaces they occupy, on their way to somewhere else.
Default Collective’s new video installation responds to the specific location of the shopfront: situated in an arcade that acts as a thoroughfare to Brisbane’s Central train station. The work isolates the formal aesthetic of the modes of data transmission that guide commuters. Without content, they become abstract fields of colour, slowly flickering and changing across the screens. The ubiquitous, yet largely transparent, mediums that transmit this information are made visible and, simultaneously, are rendered without purpose.
This work formed part of the Shop Front project that inaugurated Kuiper Projects.
